MASSENA -- Two Democrats have secured seats on the Massena town council.

Ray Lancto and Kristy Baker are now slated to serve four-year terms after defeating Republicans Sabin DeLaPorte and Lindsay Hendricks.

A total of 1,029 ballots have been counted, with 1,951 total votes cast.

Baker says her passion and dedication to the youth of the community is what originally motivated her to run for Massena Town Board.

Some of her focuses include ensuring area youth have a safe community and educational activities outside of school, she said.

Mental and physical health are also concerns Baker wishes to address, she said, noting that youth need access to programs that teach healthy coping mechanisms while avoiding the pitfalls of drug use and peer pressure.

Lancto says his primary focus and motivation for running for the town board stems from a desire to see Massena proper economically while also promoting tourism activities.

An avid boater at Barnhart, Lancto says he recognizes the “unlimited, untapped potential” the region offers.

Through collaboration with the New York Power Authority and New York State Department of Parks and Recreation, the town of Massena could “open many doors to expand the tourism industry,” Lancto said.

The establishment of a tourism committee will also assist in the progression of his vision to expand tourism for Massena, Lancto said.

The vote breakdown follows:

Ray Lancto, Democrat- 504 votes

Kristy Baker, Democrat- 511 votes

Sabina DeLaPorte, Republican- 451 votes

Lindsay Hendricks, Republican- 483 votes

All results are unofficial and do not include absentee ballots.
