CANTON – Canton Central School says it will keep the school community updated on any possible changes concerning a closure in response to COVID-19.

Canton Central School Superintendent Ronald Burke released the following statement Wednesday:

“Guidance regarding school response to the coronavirus pandemic is constantly evolving. This message is intended to clear up any confusion and help ease fear.

“· At this time, there are no confirmed cases in St. Lawrence County.

“· Canton Central School remains open and is operating as normal.

“· By public policy, should a Canton student or staff member be identified with a confirmed case of the virus, we will be required by the St. Lawrence County Department of Public Health to close for 24 hours.

“If the school is required to close for 24 hours: the school will be sanitized in accordance with the New York State Department of Health Protocols, and the St. Lawrence County Department of Public Health will determine if the school needs to remain closed beyond 24 hours.

“It is our hope that we will not be required to close. However, if we do receive these orders, we are currently planning for steps that we may be able to take to assist families.

“Please expect that information from school will continue to be forthcoming. Every day, we receive updates on the guidance by which we are required to operate. As this information is made available to us, we will make certain to pass this on to our school community.”
