MADRID — Multiple fire departments were on scene for more than four hours to battle a blaze at The Blue House Restaurant Friday, May 12.

Madrid Volunteer Fire Chief Jacob Roome confirmed the restaurant was engulfed in flames when a call was received at 4:48 a.m.

“We were responding to a fire alarm prior and after going back in service we were toned out almost immediately to respond, so we were there very quickly,” Roome said.

That quick response allowed the department to limit damage to just the restaurant.

Roome said Madrid Fire responded with assistance from Canton Fire’s tower unit, West Potsdam Volunteer Fire and Waddington Volunteer Fire Department for interior work.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by county officials. Roome said he is unable to confirm any potential cause of the fire but did say county officials will be able to determine the cause through their investigation.

Roome credited the responding departments for a quick knockdown of the fire.

Madrid Volunteer Fire Department members were back in service around 9 a.m., Roome said.

In a statement on their Facebook page, owners Josh and Alicia Taillon thanked the volunteer fire departments for their fast response.

“Some of you might have heard that we had a fire early this morning at our House.

Physically we are all fine. And that’s what matters most. Mentally and emotionally? We’re reeling.

We don’t have any details as of yet and will keep everyone posted as we learn more.

Thank you all SO much for loving us,” the statement read.

The Blue House first opened in Jan. 2021 after nearly two years of planning and demolition.

Despite COVID restrictions and six months of take out service, the Blue House garnered significant attention and developed a strong local following.

Dine-in service was first offered in July 2021, with an extensive menu that included brick oven pizzas and weekly specials.
