Heather Romanek with the Watertown-based organization, is the recipient of The Arc New York’s Self-Advocate of the Year Award. These awards were presented during the statewide, virtual annual meeting held this Fall.

The Thomas A. Maul Award is presented by The Arc New York in honor of Maul, who during his tenure as OPWDD Commissioner from 1993 to 2006, addressed many long-standing issues for people with disabilities.

Borrelli, Direct Support Professional, is one of four people throughout the state selected to win this honor. Borrelli was recognized for consistently demonstrating excellence, creativity, and commitment to providing supports to people with disabilities.

“Mike has been a member of the agency’s Employee Advisory Committee and he brings innovative thoughts to the group that support the mission and enhance services,” stated Howard Ganter, Chief Executive Officer of The Arc Jefferson – St. Lawrence. “During his 20-year career with the agency, Mike has always advocated for people we support to find interesting activities that they enjoy and regularly takes on new challenges.”

The Self-Advocate of the Year Award celebrates the achievements of one individual for their efforts to shape services that benefit themselves and others. Romanek was selected for her years of service on state and local self-advocacy groups. She is a seasoned public speaker and regularly meets with legislators to garner their support on issues critical to the disability field. Romanek is currently The Arc Jefferson – St. Lawrence’s Self-Advocacy Consultant, working as an employee to assist people supported by the agency in Jefferson County.

“Heather is very energetic and wants to speak in front of as many audiences as possible to share her story and teach people that a disability does not need to hold people back from achieving their goals,” says David Liscomb, Self -Advocate and Board of Director for The Arc Jefferson – St. Lawrence.
