Thousand Islands shipwreck experts to present Thursday at St. Lawrence County Historical Association

CANTON – Dennis and Kathi McCarthy will provide an overview of a unique collection of shipwrecks in the American waters of the Thousand Islands on Thursday, June 8 at 12 p.m. at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, 3 E. Main St.

There are more shipwrecks per square mile/km in the Thousand Islands than any other location in the Great Lakes, a press release from SLCHA said.

Autographed books will be available for purchase after the presentation.

In 1970, the McCarthys became certified scuba divers. In 1974, Dennis became involved in archeology when he volunteered at the excavation of a Revolutionary War shipwreck located off Carleton Island, Cape Vincent.

The couple are co-authors of several local history books and articles about shipwrecks in the Thousand Islands and are active with several local historical museums. They are retired and live in Cape Vincent.

The event is part of SLCHA’s Brown Bag Lunch Series, dedicated to the memory of Patricia Carson Harrington, who founded it during her 24 years as an SLCHA Trustee.

There is a $5 suggested donation; members attend for free.
