Volleyball teams, former athletes honored at Massena Central Hall of Fame ceremony

MASSENA — Two volleyball teams and four outstanding individual athletes were inducted into Massena Central School’s Class of 2023 Hall of Fame.

The 33rd Annual Hall of Fame ceremony was held Sept. 22 at Massena High School.

The 2004 volleyball team had a 16-3 overall record and the 2006 volleyball team finished with a record of 18-2, both with Coach Charleson.

Four individual athletes inducted into the Hall of Fame were Laurie Canough, Erin Francis, Kaleigh Zappia and P. Jeffrey Slack.

Laurie Canough (1971-1975) was selected for his four years as varsity hockey defenseman, coached by Stan Moore. He accumulated 19 goals and 39 assists in 70 games, playing on four league championship teams and winning two NYS Championships in 1973 and 1974.

Erin Francis (2010-2013) was inducted for lacrosse as the Massena Central All Time Points Leader for Boys and Girls with 493 total career points. She led Massena to the Section X Championship in 2010-13.

Kaleigh Zappia (2009-13) was a three-sport athlete, playing soccer, softball and basketball. In soccer she was awarded the All NAC First Team and NAC Defensive Player of the Year. In soccer she made First Team All NAC and was given the Sportsmanship Award.

P. Jeffrey Slack was inducted for his coaching of soccer, football, swimming, basketball, volleyball and lacrosse in his time at Massena from 1974-2013. He coached more teams at more levels than any other coach in Massena school’s history. The greatest highlight of his career was in helping to bring Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse teams to Massena Central.

The 2004 and 2006 volleyball team members included Hannah Callahan, Katie Jock, Sara Roundpoint, Jenn Roundpoint, Lindsay Ortman, Cara Terrance, Maegan Thomas, Kylee Thomas, Lindsay Cook, Makayla Thompson, Rebecca Harvey, Mallory Truax, Marcy Lannis, Tracie Cook, Alexia Strzalka, Ashley Thompson, Sharlie McLean-Krywanczyk, Katie Trautmann, Lindsay Cook, Kanentahawi Delisle and Julianne Skidders.
