CANTON—On July 6, the village of Canton issued a notice informing residents that an error has been identified on recent municipal water and sewer bills.
“We understand that billing issues can be frustrating, and we sincerely apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused,” a statement published by the village says.
The issue reportedly resulted from an update to the village’s billing software to adjust rates that were to take effect beginning in June of 2026, not in the current billing cycle for water and sewer use prior to June 2026.
Municipal staff have identified the problem and immediately began reviewing all affected accounts. Corrections are being calculated for each account and a credit will appear on the next quarterly bill issued. This problem does not apply to bills issued on a monthly basis.
No late fees, penalties, or service interruptions related to this billing error will be assessed on this quarterly bill.
The municipality is also reviewing its billing procedures to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future.
Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the Village of Canton Clerk’s Office at 315-386-2871 during normal business hours. Additional updates will be posted on the municipality’s website and official social media channels as they become available.
“We appreciate our residents' patience and understanding as we work to correct this matter. Providing accurate and reliable service remains a top priority, and we are committed to resolving this issue as quickly as possible,” state statement read.
