MASSENA - Massena Police have identifed the victim of a fatal fire on Center Street last week.

According to police, Misty D. Lewis, 43, was found dead at the scene of the fire.

Officials with the police department and district attorney's office have not specified if Lewis was deceased prior to the fire or as a result of the fire.

An autopsy was scheduled shortly after the fire. The results of the autopsy have not yet been released.

Following the fire, a Massena man was originally arrested on an arson charge. He has also been charged with  second-degree murder following further investigation.

According to Massena Police, Darren J. Kelley Jr., 33, was charged following a fatal fire on Center Street on July 17.

Police say one person died in the fire but have not yet named the victim.

Kelley Jr. was arraigned in Town of Massena Court today on the two felony charges and remanded back to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility on no bail.

Police say due to the nature of the incident and the ongoing investigation no further details will be provided at this time.

According to an earlier press release from Massena Fire, a call went out at 4:26 p.m. for a structure fire at 196 Center Street in the village of Massena.

Engine 30, Rescue 77, Rescue 79 and Tower 3 were dispatched initially, the release states.

Within nine minutes all residents were removed from the building and the fire was contained to the apartment of origin.

Fire officials say the structure received minimal damage, which was mostly smoke damage.

After eight hours on scene Massena Fire Engine 30 and the County Unified Command Vehicle cleared the scene around 1 a.m., officials say.

Massena Fire was assisted on-scene by Massena Village Police, Massena Rescue, St. Lawrence County Office of Emergency Services, New York State Office of Fire Prevention & Control, and New York State Police.

The American Red Cross was contacted to help with temporary housing for displaced residents.
