CANTON – Two Massena residents have been indicted and charged with killing a 3-year-old boy last November.
A St. Lawrence County grand jury handed down indictments against Jovannie E. Vega, 24, and Kaitlin Cyrus, 24, on single counts of second-degree aggravated murder, second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault.
The indictments stem from the death of Kayden Flowers on Nov. 28 at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
The child died following an assault that led to a brain bleed, severe brain swelling, loss of brain function, a broken femur, broken arm and lacerated liver, according to Massena police.
It is alleged Cyrus allowed Vega to "engage in ongoing physical abuse of the three-year-old victim" and "failed to seek aid and did not seek medical attention for the victim until 48 hours after the abuse occurred,” said police.
In the course of the assault, Vega is alleged to have thrown the victim into the bedroom wall before slamming the child on the ground several times.
