Trinity Church in Potsdam plans classic car show to raise money for restoration

POTSDAM – Trinity Church, Maple Street, Potsdam is preparing for a classic car show to be held on the church grounds on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The car show exhibitors are affiliated with the St. Lawrence/Adirondack Region of AACA. All proceeds from the car show will go to Trinity’s Sandstone Restoration Project.

Besides the car show, coffee, breakfast snacks, and other items will be available.

Rosie’s Hot Dawg food truck will also be selling food.

Kids and adults can enjoy a bit of competition and fun with Hot Wheels racing contests.

For those interested in viewing the beautiful church and Tiffany windows, tours will be offered.

Raffle tickets will be available for purchase, with themed baskets as prizes.

Everyone is welcome to come and participate in the day’s activities- enjoy cars, contests, food, fun, and raffles.

This event at Trinity, and other different events that will follow in October, November and December, will help raise 25% of the total sandstone restoration project at the church, should the church be awarded the grant.

Through the years, work has been done on the church to keep the sandstone and mortar in good shape, yet the weather is a constant challenge in keeping the mortar from deteriorating. The total restoration is a $4 million project.

Trinity was built by the (John) Clarkson family in 1835 and consecrated Trinity Church, Potsdam in 1836.

It was fashioned after Trinity Church, Wall Street in New York City.

In the decades that followed 1835, Trinity has gone through a number of alterations -- a new roof, a deeper chancel area, a separate chapel, a new tower, additional meeting areas attached to the parish hall, a church office, over-croft and nursery were also added.

Situated on Fall Island, Trinity Church is a prominent, historical beacon for the village of Potsdam.

Its beautiful Tiffany windows and Victorian Gothic style architecture make Trinity a calm and peaceful spot to visit.

The church is a spiritual home to many and, through outreach, is also used by local organizations for meetings and church-sponsored community suppers.
