Tick collection underway at Nicandri Nature Center in Massena

MASSENA — Nicandri Nature Center crew are collecting ticks for a New York State community science project out of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

The project is being conducted in St. Lawrence County and in the southern regions of New York State to understand where different tick species are present in the state and track their expansion.

Tick collection continues until June 29.

Nicandri Nature Center is one of many teams that signed up around the state to help collect ticks. Individuals can offer to collect too.

The project is specifically looking for lonestar ticks and Asian longhorned ticks to gauge spread in the state, but all ticks found will be listed in the final results.

Most of the 13 ticks found at the nature center their first day were tiny nymphs.

Ticks were put into test tubes and lint roller sheets and mailed for species and pathogens testing.

If you are interested in coming to join the project, contact the nature center.

Nicandri Nature Center is funded by the New York Power Authority.
