Three Madrid residents charged in storage building theft in Canton

CANTON – Three Madrid residents have been connected and charged in the theft of numerous items from a storage building near the baseball fields on Outer State Street in Canton following a nearly month-long investigation.

On June 21, officials at Canton Central School reported this burglary. Items stolen included two UTVs (Kubota and a John Deere Gator), weed trimmers, leaf blowers, a power broom, a pole chainsaw, a gas can and other various tools, a Canton Police Department press release noted.

Canton Police Department investigators worked extensively with the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and New York State Police to identify the offenders and locate the stolen property, according to Chief James Santimaw.

Two separate search warrants were served on two separate properties and the majority of the stolen property was recovered, he said.

On Thursday, June 27, a search warrant was served at 1988 State Highway 310 in the Town of Madrid. The John Deere Gator and many of the other items stolen, with the notable exception of the Kubota UTV, were recovered. Resident Matthew S. Wilson, 43, was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a D-Felony. Wilson was arraigned in Canton Town Court and was released on his own recognizance to reappear July 22.

On Monday, July 8, a search warrant was served at 3947 and 3951 County Rt. 14 in the Town of Madrid. The Kubota UTV was recovered from this location, as well as numerous other items identified as stolen from open cases from various locations throughout St. Lawrence County.

Resident Brendan S. O’Neil, 27, of 3947 County Rt. 14, Madrid, and Sarahanne M. Jackson, 25, 3947 County Rt. 14, Madrid, were arrested and each charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a D-Felony.

O’Neil and Jackson were arraigned in Canton Town Court and both were released on their own recognizance, scheduled to reappear on Aug. 26. O’Neil and Jackson were then turned over to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff deputies for additional pending charges.

In all, most of the stolen property from Canton Central School was recovered. Additional charges are pending against all three identified defendants in this matter, the chief said.
