The 2025 North Country Sustainability Day & Green Living Fair will take place Saturday, March 29, featuring exhibits, workshops and talks about renewable energy and sustainable living.
The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in SUNY Canton’s Dana Hall, offering ways to save money with energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Then, Sunita Halasz, an ecologist and Climate Strategy Advisor for the Adirondack Research Consortium, will present the keynote address from 3:30-4:45 p.m. in the Kingston Theater.
The event is presented by North Country Partnership for Environmental Action, Community & Sustainability.
From 10:45 a.m. - 2 p.m., there will be concurrent workshops, panels, and talks, followed by a reception from 2-3:15 p.m. Attendees will learn more about sustainable living such as eating local foods, composting, recycling, and reducing material goods, all guided by local energy contractors, farmers, and community organizers.
The fair’s exhibits, workshops, and talks will offer an inspirational way to learn how to save money with energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Highlights will include a Green Jobs Panel at 10:45 a.m. and a hybrid- and EV-car show that participants meet on their way inside.
Raffles, demonstrations, posters, and hands-on activities for both children and adults will add to the fun.
SUNY Canton, Clarkson University, St. Lawrence, University and SUNY Potsdam, are teaming up with Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, the Canton Sustainability Committee, and the Potsdam Climate Smart Communities Initiative to organize this informational and expo event.

Green Jobs Panel Room 230.
Presented by Brandon Baldwin, Bob Penski and others. Careers considered to be “green” or “sustainable” are many but often not well known. Panel members will talk about and take questions on the different types of employment considered green.
UN Sustainable Development Goals Progress Report
Room 228. Presented by Heather Sullivan-Catlin and students from SUNY Potsdam. Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development supplies “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership” ( http://www.sdgs.un.org ).
Tips for Household Energy Efficiency
Room 299. Presented by Cole Fuller, Community Member of the Campus Climate Action Corps. There are many different ways to make homes energy efficient, which improves comfort and saves money! We will give you tips and tricks, from simple DIY improvements to understanding your energy bill to information on support programs.
Energy Jeopardy with Prizes
Room 229. Presented by Louise Jensen with Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County North Country Clean Energy Hub. Participants in the workshop will play Jeopardy to test their energy knowledge and learn while accumulating points for electric cost-saving prizes! Competitive, fun, and the perfect 7th Inning stretch at a conference!
North Country Wild
Room 228. Presented by Dan French of St. Lawrence University with Erika Barthelmess and students. NOCO Wild is a community science project with the goal of giving community access to free trail cameras that they can sign out to put up where they live. The program aims to teach local community members about local wildlife, biodiversity, and animal density while collecting data to help answer questions about how animals move and behave around the area throughout the year. The workshop is the first step in training community members to use the cameras to collect data where they live. Attendees will learn how trail cameras work, how to identify a good setup location and set up their camera and how to record relevant data.
How Can Organizations and Municipalities Stand Up for Nature?
Room 230. Presented by Tzintzun Aguilar-Izzo, Community Member of Talking Rivers with Blake Lavia and Cathy Shrady. How do we honor the personhood of the other-than-human world, while washing away structures of oppression? This is the question that the Talking Rivers team will strive to answer with the “Listening to Nature Toolkit,” an interactive guide that shares how organizations can include the voice of ecosystems in their decision making process. From changing the pronouns we use when referring to other-than-human people, to drafting land easements that protect the Rights of Nature, the Talking Rivers team will go over changes that can honor the personhood of ecosystems and non-human species. The presenters will also delve into how municipalities can protect the health of their residents by passing local laws that protect the “Rights of Rivers.”

Room 230. Presented by Emmett Smith, founder of Northern Power and Light, a local clean energy company. Topics will include Rural Resiliency; Household Sustainability; Personal Sustainability; Integrating Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice; Community Climate Change Resiliency.
Repair Fair Discussion
Room 228. Presented by Cole Fuller, Community Member with the Canton Sustainability Committee with Cathy Shrady. To promote the Committee’s upcoming Repair Fair, we will talk about the idea of repair fairs, how they work around the world, and other ways of keeping things out of the landfill.
Increasing Sustainability at SUNY Potsdam
Room 229. Kate Cleary of SUNY Potsdam with 15 students. Cleary’s “Introduction to Sustainability” course includes a semester-long project where students identify a sustainability issue on our campus and then research and propose a solution. Their final product is a poster explaining their proposal and these posters will be on display.

Composting at SUNY Potsdam
Room 229. Presented by Jess Pearson of SUNY Potsdam with Ryan Goss, Liam O’Neil, Emily Yousey. Students in the Applied Sustainability Capstone at SUNY Potsdam will present their work on implementing composting on campus in dining halls and residential facilities. They are complying with state laws regarding composting at Higher Education facilities, but the implementation hasn’t been perfect, and some of the challenges have made it clear how the institution will need to move forward.

Sunita Halasz, an ecologist and Climate Strategy Advisor for the Adirondack Research Consortium, will present the keynote speech from 3:30 - 4:45 p.m. in SUNY Canton’s Kingston Theater.
Halasz is also Project Coordinator for the Adirondack Climate Outreach and Resilience Network (ACORN) and has broad experience in sustainability and beyond. She will share results of the North Country Rural Resilience Roadmap.
The Roadmap details the importance of Northern NY in achieving state and national climate goals, and outlines local and regional needs and shovel-ready climate resiliency projects identified from community listening sessions in 14 Northern NY counties.
This is part of a broader goal of empowering our region to foster resilience in the face of extreme weather events such as Hurricane Debbie last summer as well as promoting a more sustainable future.
ACORN is a partnership of the Adirondack Research Consortium, The Wild Center, Paul Smith’s College, Adirondack Foundation, and NYSERDA.
She is a co-coordinator of North Country Homeschooling, a multi-county group of over 1,000 families who organize opportunities for home-instructed students.
Halasz was formerly with the Adirondack Park Agency helping to coordinate federally funded wetlands programs, work with local governments, and review State Land Unit Management Plans.
She holds a BS and MS from Cornell University in plant pathology and forest ecology.
