OGDENSBURG -- Veterans can now access support services  at 230 Ford Street in Ogdensburg following the opening of Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Project on Monday.

Named to honor the memory of an Iraq war hero from Mount Sinai, NY, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Project is a peer-to-peer program for Veterans facing the challenges of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), the organization's website says.

The late Dwyer was a combat medic who saw active combat in Iraq not long after enlisting following the Sept. 11 attacks.

A photo of Dwyer carrying an injured Iraqi boy in a combat zone led to some fame for the soldier, but with the fame came Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Those issues that Dwyer began to experience during his service continued after he left the military and eventually led to his death.

Attending  the event was Ogdensburg Mayor Michael Tooley and Assemblyman Scott Gray.

“Honored to attend the ribbon-cutting for the Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Project in Ogdensburg today. This vital initiative provides our veterans with the support and community they deserve. Grateful to everyone involved in making this happen. Together, we stand strong for our veterans,” said.

The project which launched in 2012 takes a confidential, one-on-one, peer-to-peer approach that has rapidly captured the attention and support of both veterans and mental health professionals statewide and across the nation.

"Through the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, we are proud to have taken a leadership role in piloting this innovative program that will soon serve as a national model for Veterans assistance. We are also indebted to the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency for the critical role they have played as a partner in supporting the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project," the website says.
