CANTON — SUNY Canton is placing particular emphasis on preparing its students for emergencies beginning Sept. 16.

“Preparation is the first step in responding to an emergency,” said Derek L. Converse, SUNY Canton Environmental Health and Safety Manager. “By participating in these trainings, students not only protect themselves but also help create a safer community for everyone."

The following trainings and a shelter-in-place drill are scheduled for the week:

  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16: Fire safety training for Kennedy Hall students using a fire extinguisher training simulator and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control’s Fire Safety House.
  • 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17: Fire safety training for students, open to anyone.
  • 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 17: Lifesaving CPR demonstrations by the EMS Squad.
  • Noon Tuesday, Sept. 17: A mock dorm burn demonstration with Canton Fire and Rescue. The event features a free raffle for hats and t-shirts donated by the SUNY Canton College Association.
  • 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19: SUNY Canton University Police will be holding a campus-wide shelter-in-place drill. The training will be announced using the Rave emergency alert system.

All in-person events will be held on the Roselle Academic Plaza, and the shelter-in-place drill will be a campus-wide training.
