AKWESASNE -- The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is continuing to take steps that safeguard the inherent and protected right of Akwesashró:non (People of Akwesasne) to fish in Akwesasne’s territorial waters.

To support this effort, a Non-Member Fishing Regulation and Law was developed and implemented through Tribal Council Resolution 2011-52.

According to the tribe, proposed amendments include establishing a season for Non-Members to fish in Akwesasne’s territorial waters and setting catch limits, as well as an increase in fishing permit fees.

The Tribal Compliance team will be presenting the new non-member fishing amendments that will include community comments from the previous January 18th and 25th community consultation sessions. The presentation will take place on April 26, at 5 p.m.

The in-person meetings will take place in the first-floor meeting room at the Tribal Administration Building, located at 71 Margaret Terrance Memorial Way in Akwesasne. Those wishing to join virtually must register in advance at https://bit.ly/40g37Gg.

For more information, contact the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Compliance Department at (518) 358-2273.
