AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has renamed its Tribal Court in honor of the late Peter “PJ” Herne, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, community advocate and former chief judge who died Aug. 10.
The newly named PJ Herne Memorial Courtroom recognizes Herne’s service to Akwesasne and his commitment to ensuring community members had access to the legal system.
Herne was a key contributor to the tribe’s legal aid pilot project, which provided free legal services to community members in need.
“Today, we are recognizing and honoring the life, service, and legacy of Peter ‘PJ’ Herne, a devoted advocate for Akwesasne whose contributions to our community have left a lasting impact,” said Jill Benedict, executive director of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe.
The Tribal Council said the renaming honors Herne’s dedication to the community and his commitment to justice and compassion. The council also emphasized the importance of continuing his work to ensure community members have access to fair representation and support.
In addition to renaming the courtroom, the tribe plans to establish the PJ Herne Memorial Scholarship to support tribal members pursuing legal education and careers in law.
“Through the courtroom that bears his name and the scholarship that will help educate future generations, PJ’s impact on Akwesasne will continue for many years to come,” Benedict said.
The tribe said the scholarship is intended to help prepare future advocates, attorneys, judges and other legal professionals who will carry on Herne’s commitment to justice and community service.
