CANTON — St. Lawrence University Intercollegiate Athletics has named Ed Pacey the first head coach of its new triathlon program, marking an exciting milestone in the expansion of Saints Athletics.
Pacey is the first of two landmark hires for the Scarlet and Brown, who introduce both triathlon and flag football in the 2027-28 academic year. Pacey will immediately hit the recruiting trail, building out his first roster and establishing the program as a premier destination for triathlon in the United States.
The new teams are the latest example of St. Lawrence's continued investment in the student experience—from innovative academic programs and experiential learning opportunities to new ways for students to compete, lead, and find community through athletics. Women's triathlon will begin competition in fall 2027, while women's flag football will begin in spring 2028.
"We are thrilled to welcome Coach Pacey to St. Lawrence University as we take this historic leap in establishing our women's triathlon program," said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Franco Bari. "Ed brings a proven track record of developing successful student-athletes, competing at the highest level of collegiate triathlon, and building a strong program culture. His experience and leadership will be instrumental as we begin recruiting our inaugural roster and laying the foundation for long-term success."
"The addition of women's triathlon reflects our continued commitment to expanding opportunities for student-athletes while strengthening the St. Lawrence athletics experience," Bari continued. "We look forward to seeing Ed build a program that embodies the tradition and competitive spirit of the Scarlet and Brown."
Pacey comes to Canton after a lengthy, decorated coaching career spanning over 20 years. He most recently served as Director of Swimming and Triathlon at Millikin University, where he oversaw a triathlon program that produced three All-Americans and posted a third-place finish at the NCAA championships.
He arrived at Millikin in 2022 as an assistant swimming coach before being promoted to head men's and women's swimming coach in 2023. That ultimately led to oversight of both swimming programs and women's triathlon beginning in June 2024 as the director.
Before arriving at Millikin, Pacey served as head coach and director of competitive swimming at the Lakeland Hills Family YMCA in New Jersey in 2022, and was also the director of competitive swimming at the Blue Ash YMCA in Ohio from 2019-2022. He was named one of the top 50 age group coaches in the country by the American Swimming Coaches Association for the 2019-20 season.
Earlier in his career, Pacey was head coach of the Decatur Family YMCA swim team in Illinois from 2017 to 2019, where he produced the program's first YMCA national qualifier in more than 10 years. He previously led the Sheridan Swim Club in Quincy, Ill., from 2014 to 2017, and the Mt. Vernon Swim Team in Indiana from 2012 to 2014.
Pacey holds a bachelor's degree in economics with a minor in mathematics from the University of Illinois.
