CANTON – Several in-person, community-focused educational discussions are being scheduled over the coming months through St. Lawrence Health’s (SLH) newly established Partnering In Your Care series.

All community members are invited and encouraged to attend any or all of the education and information sessions to assist them in better understanding certain medical conditions, to learn about alternate resources within and outside of healthcare, and to find out about what is taking place throughout SLH as a whole.

Mark your calendar for the first event being held Friday, July 12 at 11 a.m., when Canton-Potsdam Hospital Neurologist Hamza Malek, MD, will be leading the presentation. The event is free and open to the public and will be held at the SLH Medical Campus located at 6119 US Highway 11, Canton.

Dr. Malek will be discussing “Understanding Stroke: Recognize, Respond, Recover.” Following his presentation the public will be given the opportunity to ask questions of Dr. Malek.

This event is ideal for individuals who have experienced a stroke, have a loved one affected by it, or simply wish to gain a better understanding of stroke, including how to identify the signs and respond effectively.SLH Director of Quality and Regulatory Affairs Jackie Scanlon noted everyone involved in the educational series is excited to be offering a variety of programs to area residents that focus on their health and well-being.

“Patient and family engagement is a crucial aspect of healthcare. This level of participation involves creating conditions where patients, their family members, care partners, providers, and hospital staff work together as partners to improve the quality and safety of care,” Ms. Scanlon said. “Through this collaborative partnership, community members can expect to have improved patient experiences and outcomes. And by attending our community events, we hope our patients and local residents will gain a better understanding of how important it is for them to be actively involved in their care, and feel comfortable asking questions and requesting our support.”
