PIERREPONT -- The Pierrepont Volunteer fire department is encouraging residents to inspect and clean chimneys before using wood stoves and to service furnaces before cold weather sets in.
As colder weather hits the North Country, the fire department also suggests residents check or change the batteries in all smoke detectors as well.
"Heating season is fast approaching and a little maintenance can find and fix a small problem before it becomes a much bigger problem," they wrote on Facebook.
