To the Editor:
I write today following what is the latest step by Mayor Jeffrey Skelly, and his agent Stephen Jellie, to circumvent a six-year contract – with the Ogdensburg Professional Firefighters (IAFF - Local 1799) – that was negotiated and approved in 2019 – and its terms implemented 2020.
The city in its most recent action to deny hazard pay – continues to pursue illegal actions, conduct outrageous maneuvers, and abuse the time-limited authority – granted by the community.
The Mayor and Mr. Jellie – have once again concocted a scheme to punish those with whom they disagree. In reality, this is little more than a veiled and vindictive political effort designed to unfairly punish those who have selflessly served it.
The notion of providing hazard pay is a long-standing commitment – by city officials to Ogdensburg’s firefighters -- and an acknowledgement of the risk firefighters face each day.
It is also revealing that Mr. Jellie, on the eve of his departure from Ogdensburg – has elected to take an action not based on merit – but rather revenge. And, as a result, the community will be forced to pay for unnecessary legal fees and court determined awards – stemming from this juvenile behavior.
And, while Jellie may be soon gone from the North Country, the people of Ogdensburg have reached the conclusion that the current Mayor and those who surround him are not capable of responsibly managing its affairs.
Mayor Skelly is once again grasping at straws. His efforts may bring him momentary amusement but will only further strengthen the resolve of those whom they attack.
