CANTON – School meals will be free for all students at Canton Central School this year.
CCS Superintendent Ron Burke made that announcement at the school board meeting on Thursday, Sept. 3.
‘The state has extended our free food program through the remainder of this calendar year,” Burke said. “Boy, I hope I didn't just speak out of turn. Because I believe at this point it is unofficial, we haven’t got the actual notice from SED.”
“It will not break my heart if this becomes a permanent fixture for us,” Burke said.
There will be no income eligibility requirements for families. Both lunch and breakfast will be free.
Burke said the news was exciting and that it is a huge burden off many people’s shoulders.
The school will offer five days of food to students, whether they attend in person or completely remote.
