Newell R. Stewart, 92, Heuvelton

HEUVELTON -- Graveside Services for Newell R. Stewart, 92, of Heuvelton will be held in the spring at Hillcrest Cemetery in Heuvelton with full military honors.

Mr. Stewart died on Friday evening, January 5, 2024, at North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation in Massena, where he had been a resident for the past few years.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home.

Newell R. Stewart was born on September 22, 1931, in Ogdensburg, NY.

He was the son of the late Roy E. and May (Steel) Stewart.

He was a graduate of Heuvelton Central School and enlisted in the United States Air Force. Upon his honorable discharge, he went to work for his father’s business, Stewart Brothers Beauty and Barber Supplies, located in Heuvelton.

Newell was an honorary member of the Barney Pond Hunting Club and a founding member of the Diamond Sportsman’s Club. He was also the oldest living member of Alcoholics Anonymous in St. Lawrence County with 50 Years of sobriety.

He loved fishing and hunting, being in the woods, telling stories, and being a “snowbird” wintering in Haines City, Florida.

He is survived by his children; Allen Stewart of Canton, Cynthia Pratt of Massena, and Carolene Gordon of North Carolina. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Mason and Katlynn Pratt and Hannah, Jacob and Claire Gordon as well as his great-grandchildren Haiden and Wrenleigh Tyo.
