New gateway sign planned for green space at the end of Maple Street in Potsdam

POTSDAM — Visitors and residents entering the village from the west will soon be treated with a new “Welcome to Potsdam” sign.

The village board of trustees at their meeting Oct. 19 authorized village Mayor Alexandra Jacobs Wilke to negotiate and execute an agreement with Adirondack Studios in Argyle, NY, to design and construct the gateway welcome sign.

The sign is part of the village’s Downtown Riverwalk Project, which wraps around the end of Maple Street and connects to Sandstone Drive. The gateway sign will be installed in the green space at that nexus in the village right-of-way.

The sign and labor will be paid for through the village’s NYS Downtown Revitalization Initiative funding that was allocated for the Riverwalk.

“This is kind of an offshoot of our DRI project,” Village Mayor Alexandra Jacobs Wilke told board members.

“Now that the funding is available this will allow us to pursue with Adirondack Studios the design process,” she said. “This would be up Maple Street in that mini park area where they just got some plantings and a new sidewalk so that as you enter the community there is a ‘Welcome’ that is very clear that you are in Potsdam.”

Wilke said Adirondack Studios was a company with a good deal of experience with developing “special signs.”

The mayor said a small committee will be formed to help develop a specific design.

Adirondack Studios is a global design firm with headquarters in Argyle. They bill themselves as designers who emphasize storytelling in their work.
