Morristown and Ogdensburg students win scholarship

OGDENSBURG — Three graduating seniors from local schools received the first annual Lonny J. Carpenter Scholarship of $5,000 each.

Recipients were Morristown Central School’s Walker Belile and Ogdensburg Free Academy’s Theodore Hewko and Mia McNamara.

The seniors were all past Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club members.

The scholarships were donated to OBGC from Lonny Carpenter and his wife Patty LaRose Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter, a long-time club OBGC member and graduate of OFA in 1980, attended West Point, served as an Army helicopter pilot, and had a business career with Stryker Corporation. The Carpenters now live in Michigan, spending summers on the St. Lawrence.

“The club was  instrumental to my childhood development, and Mr. Luckie Sr. and other club leaders had such a positive and lasting impression on me. I learned from the club and built on that solid foundation throughout my life. Frankly, I’m not sure where my life would have led if it were not for the club,” stated Lonny Carpenter.

Walker Belile has a 93.32 GPA, is active in sports, band and Honor Society, and a Morristown Fire Dept. volunteer.  He plans to attend Norwich University and study criminal justice under the Army ROTC Program with a goal to be an officer in the U.S. Army.

Theodore Hewko has been active in sports, is an academic scholar at BOCES, member of the National Technical Honor Society, and an active community volunteer. He plans on attending Southeast Lineman Training School in Georgia.

Nia McNamara has participated in sports, received the OBGC Russ McDonald Service Award for service to the club and community, holds two part-time jobs, and is a volunteer for the Ogdensburg Rescue Squad. She plans to attend EMT School at Clarkson University and continue her Rescue Squad work.

“We are so thankful to Lonny and Patty for providing these awards to deserving winners. We are so fortunate that alumni like Lonny remember the club and the benefit it had for him growing up, and continue to ‘pay it forward’ by helping today’s youth,” said Tom Luckie, OBGC Executive Director.
