MASSENA — The Massena Volunteer Fire Department has a new workhorse in its stable of vehicles, having recently received Engine 30.

The new pumper truck, which has been in the works for months, was finally delivered to the station at the end of Fire Prevention Week and will now serve as the main truck to respond to calls.

It took over two years to get the job done but Engine 30 is now in duty and will replace Engine 28, which fire officials say was 28 years old and past it’s expected service life.

The new engine will be used in response to vehicle fires and accidents, according to fire officials.

Fire officials also told village trustees previously that the engine will be on scene at structure fires.

The engine will come at a cost of $800,000.

Trustees bonded for $150,000 last year to cover part of the cost, with $500,000 coming from American Rescue Plan Act funds and another $150,000 from the fire department.

The new engine was built in Iowa over the last year by Toyne, Inc., where fire department members were able to follow the progress of it’s construction.

A final inspection was completed in August by officials, before getting the final details added in Albany.
