North Country This Week
MASSENA — Village Trustees have announced committee assignments for the next year, following a round of elections in November that led to a number of changes to the makeup of the board.
Former Deputy Mayor Matt LeBire opted to not seek re-election, saying he wanted to take a break from politics to take some personal time.
Fourteen-year trustee Francis Carvel also resigned from the board, effective Dec. 31, 2022, to take up a seat on the town board. Carvel will complete a one-year unexpired term on the town board after Board Member Tom Miller opted to not run for re-election to the seat.
A new Village Board member will need to be appointed during the January meeting to fill Carvel’s seat. That appointee will then assume Carvel’s roles on the various committees he serves on.
Miller had been appointed to the seat by former Town Supervisor Steve O’Shaughnessy to replace Board Member Bob Elsner, who retired last November.
Trustee Chad Simpson, who was elected to fill out an unexpired term on the Village Board, will now assume the role of Deputy Mayor as well.
Mayor Greg Paquin and Trustee Christine Winston both won re-election in November and will continue to serve in the same roles.
Newcomer Ken McGowan was elected to the Village Board after serving on the Massena Planning Commission.
Committee assignments include the following:
Code Enforcement- McGowan and Simpson
Economic Development- Carvel and McGowan
Fire Committee- Winston and Simpson
Personnel Committee- Winston and Carvel
Police Committee- Winston and Simpson
Recreation Commission- Winston and McGowan
Rescue Squad Committee- Paquin and Simpson
Street Committee- McGowan and Carvel
Water & Sewer Committee- McGowan and Carvel
