MASSENA —Over 700 hungry pancake lovers attended the 65th annual Massena Rotary Pancake Day held at Massena Central High School March 23.
Two dozen Massena Rotary Club members and their spouses, as well as 75 students and a volunteer from Liberty Utilities, helped in making the hundreds of pancakes and serving the huge crowd again this year.
“These pancakes are delicious. They can’t be beat,” said Bob Page and Betty Robillard, of Louisville, as they were eating their pancakes with fresh maple syrup and sausages in the packed cafeteria.
“We had many sponsors of the event that were featured on the placemats and the advertising, including SeaComm who helped with plates, takeout boxes, cups and napkins,” said Eowyn Doud, Rotary Club treasurer.
Over 50 vendors sold their crafts in the hallways of the school during the event, double the number of vendors from last year, said organizer Darcy Sharpe, a 12-year Rotarian.
The vendor show was started last year to replace the silent auction.
“I want to thank each and every one of the vendors for taking part with their support of the Massena Rotary Club. The money raised at our Pancake Day goes to assist our many programs in the community,” said Sharpe.
“The Massena Rotary Club supports our local food pantries: Massena’s Neighborhood Center, St. Peters Outreach, Salvation Army, Massena Methodist Church Free Meals, and Meals on Wheels,” she said.
Also, the club supports the Massena Hospital Foundation, Massena Free Clinic, Massena High School Academic Banquet and five scholarships at Massena High Schools," she said.
“Massena’s Rotary Club has also sponsored many youth activities in the community which include, but are not limited to, the Arc of Jefferson St. Lawrence County Camp at Dodge Pond, Police Activities League of Massena (PALS), Massena Recreation Skating, and Music Friends,” said Sharpe.
