Massena Library says thanks for supporting Eclipse Viewing Party

To the Editor:

Yesterday (April 8), we here in the North Country experienced a total solar eclipse. This is not something we get to see very often here; there was a total eclipse that passed through central NY in 1925, and the next one won’t be until 2399. So, it was kind of a big deal.

Because we knew that many of our patrons didn’t have a great view at their own homes, because of other houses, trees, etc. that would be in the way, we decided to make a day of it here at MPL. And we had this giant parking lot behind us, that was just begging to be used for something. In that moment, the rudiments of what became our Eclipse Viewing Party were born.

In anticipation of the event, we were able to procure 3000 eclipse glasses (with a big thank you to StarNet SEAL and WellNow), to offer an Eclipse presentation given by Aileen O’Donoghue (SLU) and Elaine Fortin (NASA Solar System Ambassador), make Eclipse t-shirts with Kris Rozelle, and make Eclipse cookies. Our viewing party was attended by around 100 people! We had the I Dream Of Wienies hot dog cart on site, offering delicious hot dogs to everyone, and WellNow was there, offering freebies and health information. The weather was perfect, and we saw the most breathtaking celestial event that most of us will never get a chance to see again. It was truly awesome.

We at the Massena Public Library would like to thank everyone who helped make the day such a success: to WellNow for their generous donation which enabled us to buy more glasses and what was needed for the t-shirt craft and cookies; to Kris Rozelle for helping with our eclipse t-shirt craft; to the Friends of the Library for funding our own MPL t-shirts and for all their support; to BRKK Tees for our wonderful MPL t-shirts; to I Dream Of Wienies for coming to our event with their hotdog cart. Your help was so appreciated.

But most of all, the biggest thank you to all of our patrons. Without you, none of this would have happened. We cannot express enough how much we appreciate each and every one of you. Libraries are all about community, and we are truly blessed to have one of the best communities around.
