Kenneth "Kenny" Burwell, 67, Canton

CANTON -- Our beloved Kenneth “Kenny” Burwell, age 67, passed away at home on May 31, 2024.

He was born October 17, 1956, in Henderson, North Carolina to the late Frank and Ethel Thorpe Burwell.

Ken grew up in Brooklyn, New York with his siblings, Barbara and Patricia, and Grandmother, Ethel Thorpe.

He was a very charismatic, gentle, and kindhearted person who loved his family, his community, and good soul food.

Throughout his life, Ken always served the communities that he called home. Early on he worked in his parents’ community grocery store in Brooklyn.

He went on to graduate from Wingate High School where he had an exceptional football career.

Afterwards, he moved to the Hudson Valley, where he graduated from Dutchess Community College and later went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from SUNY Canton.

He dedicated his life’s work as a Registered Nurse until he retired.

In his later years, he found a home in Canton where he mentored others through Statewide Peer Assistance for Nurses.

He was a strong advocate for those in recovery who suffered from addiction and helped countless others find hope.

A compassionate and caring person, Kenny always saw the best in those around him.

Ken loved and held immense pride for his family.

His legacy survives through his children, Kenneth Burwell Jr., Shawnequa Brown & husband, Eric, Brian Burwell, Ethan Burwell & wife, Anita Venkatesh, and Alexander Burwell & partner, Mandi Moody, Jamane Pitcher & wife, Heather, Larissa Alvarado, Caresse Elting & husband, Anthony; his spouse, Teresa Tocco Burwell and former spouse, Rebecca Burwell; his sister, Barbara Staten; his grandchildren, Joshua Brown, Chase Brown, Madelyn Brown, Ashton Burwell, Angelo Alvarado, Areian Pitcher, Anna-lena Alvarado, Javier Alvarado, Cheyenne Pitcher, Nathanial Green-Elting, Aaron Green-Elting, Anesse Elting; his niece, LaToneya Cumberbatch with husband, Chris and their children, Scarlett and Sebastian; and a plethora of cousins, extended family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Burwell and Ethel Thorpe Burwell, Grandmother, Ethel Thorpe, sister, Patricia Burwell, and son, Aaron Tocco Pitcher.

A viewing will be held at the William G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave, Poughkeepsie, New York 12603 on Saturday June 8, 2024.

All are welcome from 2pm to 5pm with a Funeral Service at 4pm.
