Barbara Whalen, 98, Massena

MASSENA -- Barbara Whalen, age 98, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on August 30, 2024.

Barbara was known for her sense of humor, generosity and kindness.

Barb was born in Potsdam on to the late Bernard and Rose Wade (Conners).

She graduated from Potsdam High School and then went on to receive a teaching degree from Potsdam State College. After many years, she continued her education and received a Master’s of Science in Education from SUNY Potsdam.

Barbara married her college sweetheart, the late William ( Bill) Whalen.

They settled in Massena and enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 68 years.

Barb is survived by her four children, Stephen M. Whalen of Elmira, NY, William C. Whalen of Liverpool, NY, Nancy (Tom) Fucillo of Camillus and Kathy (Vance) Fleury of Massena , NY. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Tom, Kelly, Kevin, Danielle, Steve and Aaron.

Barb is predeceased by her two brothers, Bernard (Ethyl) Wade and Harmon (Kaye) Wade, and two sisters, Margaret (Joe) Cook and Rosemary ( Michael) Mahaney.

Barb and Bill enjoyed many activities including playing Bridge with their long time friends in their Bridge group, cycling, traveling to Florida and other destinations and spending summers at their camp on the Rainbow Falls Reservoir in South Colton, NY.

Barb was an active member in the Women’s College Club. Initially, she was recording secretary and was later elected president of the club in 1962.

Barb had a passion for reading and was a member of a book club in Massena.

After many years of raising their children , Barb accepted a job as the reading specialist at St. Regis Mohawk School in Hogansburg, NY. She remained there until her retirement.

Afterwards, she volunteered in the adult literacy program in Massena and helped out with the Meals on Wheels program.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 17 Lawrence Avenue, Potsdam NY on November 2nd at 10am with Rev. Joseph Giroux celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery followed by a luncheon for family and friends.
