CANTON – A state grant announced Tuesday will pay for nearly one fourth of a $13 million wastewater treatment project in the Village of Canton.

The village was awarded a $3,375,000 grant from the New York State Water Infrastructure Improvement & Intermunicipal Grant Award Program.

“It’s all about clean water,” said Mayor Michael Dalton. “This is a really critical piece that will help our rate payers in the community. This is an important project that really needs to be done.”

“In addition to zero percent financing this WIIA grant, this makes for a nice holiday announcement for Canton,” added Dalton.

Earlier this year the village board hired the engineering form of Barton and Loguidice to explore funding sources for the sewer treatment facility upgrades and design work.

“I am really pleased with their work. They have been very good at helping us find funding sources,” the mayor remarked.

The upgrades are expected to include the installation of new liners and piping and a need for a sewer vac truck.

The village will fund the project through a zero-percent financing Bond Anticipation Note.

The sewer treatment facility project is just one of several key projects facing village officials in 2024. Other projects include establishing a secondary water source at an estimated cost of $2.2 million, redeveloping the Midtown Plaza now owned by the village, a major reconstruction project on Cleaveland Avenue and lower Judson Street to deal with stormwater drainage problems at an estimated cost of between $800,000 and $1 million, and formulating a plan to reconfigure and renovate the existing Canton Municipal Building.
