GOUVERNEUR — Police are investigating the death of a man who was found dead at 1:03 p.m. on Feb. 13 after being involved in an altercation at Serendipity Bar at 1:36 a.m. earlier the same day.
Gouverneur Village Police Chief Laurina Greenhill said the incident was under investigation in a prepared statement following requests for comment Feb. 22.
She did not say if the investigation was considered a potential homicide. She did not confirm if any charges were expected or any suspects were in custody, however she said polcie are still seeking information from the public regarding the altercation.
Andrew D. Johnston, 39, was found to be unconscious and not breathing following a call to police, officials say.
The Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad and police department were summoned to an apartment located at 18 Johnstown St., Gouverneur, where Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene.
New York State Police also assisted at the scene, following the report.
An autopsy was performed by Dr. Robert Stopacher, Medical Examiner, at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton. However, cause and manner of death are pending further investigation, police said.

The Gouverneur Police are working with the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s office and do not believe there is a threat to the public.
The investigation is ongoing.
