CANTON — Zach Mallard has been named the defensive coordinator for the St. Lawrence University football team, head coach Dan Puckhaber announced on Wednesday morning.

Mallard joins the Saints after serving as the assistant defensive backs coach and defensive graduate assistant at Division I Auburn University in Alabama.

"SLU Football is excited to welcome Coach Mallard to our football family," said Puckhaber. "He has had some impressive coaching stops at multiple college football levels including the SEC. The opportunity for him to come home to New York and lead a defensive unit was the perfect match for the next step in his professional career."

Prior to his time at Auburn, Mallard spent four seasons (2019-2023) at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, as a Defensive Backs Coach, Defensive Pass Game Coordinator, Academic Coordinator and Strength and Condition Intern. He coached the entire secondary since the spring of 2019, including running position meetings and daily practice plans for safeties and corners. While at Huntingdon, he helped coach the Hawks to the NCAA National Playoffs including three of his four seasons.

In August of 2022, Mallard was selected as the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Fellow for the Los Angeles Chargers, where he assisted the entire defensive staff, specifically the defensive backs, during all practice and walk through-related activities during training camp.

He also worked a stint at Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina from 2017-2018 and has coached at numerous college football camps with the CCSC, Top 200 and Jr. Day Football, as well as the ESPN Camellia Bowl Summer Youth Camp and summer camps at Alabama, Samford and Georgia.

Mallard holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in Sports Management from St. John Fisher College and an Associate's Degree in Business Administration from Hudson Valley.

He will begin his official duties immediately.
