Fall foliage is nearing or reaching peak conditions across parts of St. Lawrence and Franklin counties, with some areas already past their seasonal best, according to the latest I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report.
The report, issued Wednesday, is based on observations from more than 100 volunteer field observers across New York. I LOVE NY defines “peak” as the best overall appearance of foliage during the season, considering color transition, brilliance and leaf drop.
In St. Lawrence County, Mt. Arab in Piercefield is at 100% change and just past peak, with very bright reds, oranges, yellows and purples.
Wanakena is reporting 85% change and just-past-peak conditions, with bright deep oranges and yellows and many fallen red leaves. Nearby Star Lake and Cranberry Lake are expected to reach peak foliage this weekend.
Potsdam is at 75% change and near peak, with a bright fall palette, while Eisenhower Lock in Massena is also at 75% change and near peak. The area is showing mostly yellow and orange leaves, highlighted by wisps of red and purple.
In Franklin County, Saranac Lake is reporting 95% change and peak conditions, with a bright mix of fall colors.
Tupper Lake is at 90% to 95% change and just past peak, with foliage ranging from cinnamon and caramel to orange, mango, saffron, daffodil and bittersweet.
Malone is at 50% change and near peak, with mostly bright reds and oranges.
In neighboring Jefferson County, the Thousand Islands Bridge area in Alexandria Bay is at 80% change and near peak, with a brilliant mix of fall colors.
The foliage is expected to provide a backdrop for New York State’s Path Through History Weekend, scheduled for Oct. 10-12.
