OGDENSBURG -- Elizabeth “Betty” M. Bateman, age 91, of Ogdensburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Home, with her loving family by her side.
Throughout her life, Betty worked at JJ Newberry’s, Augsbury Corporation, Newell’s Manufacturing, and later in the billing department at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center, retiring in 1998. She worked hard throughout her years, both on the job and at home, always giving her best to those who depended on her.
Betty found great pleasure in baking cookies and pies, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and making memories with the family she loved so dearly. Her kitchen and home were places of warmth, comfort, and love.
She showed her love in countless ways, often through the little things she did for everyone around her.
She was also a woman of faith and service, belonging to the Altar and Rosary Society and generously giving her time to clean and care for her church for many years.
Betty is survived by her ten children: Steven (Kathy) Bateman of Lisbon, Pamela (Paul) Lepcio of Sherburne, NY, Kathleen (Dennis) O’Neil of Glastonbury, CT, Barbara (Dale) Richardson of Ogdensburg, Jan (Jerry) Lincoln of Ogdensburg, Scott (Patricia) Bateman of Niskayuna, Kevin (Pam) Bateman of Ogdensburg, Frank (Sharon) Bateman of Waddington, Matthew (Wipa) Bateman of Troy, and Mark (Malisa) Bateman of Latham; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two brothers, Harold Mathews of Potsdam and Laurence Mathews of Lisbon; a sister, Laura Mathews of Rensselaer Falls; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband, Francis “Spike” Bateman, in 2019, whom she married on July 24, 1965, at Notre Dame Church; her brother, Paul Mathews; and her sister, Elaine Kalal.
Betty was born on June 6, 1935, in Oswego, the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Longley) Mathews.
She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy before beginning her life as a wife, mother, and dedicated provider for her family.
Betty leaves behind a family that was blessed to have her love, guidance, strength, and devotion for so many years. The lessons she taught, the traditions she created, the cookies and pies she baked, and the countless sacrifices she made will never be forgotten.
She was more than a mother; she was the heart of her family. Her love will continue through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren for generations to come.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at the Oswegatchie Mausoleum Chapel, with Deacon Tony Pastizzo officiating.
Visitation will be held at the chapel prior to the service from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Nursing Home or St. Mary’s Cathedral.
