Don Binan, 88, Massena

MASSENA -- Don Binan, 88, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2024, at the St. Regis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Massena, NY.

Don, the son of Douglas and Harriet (Skiff) Binan, was born in Nicholville, NY in 1936. He joined the Air Force upon graduation, serving at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia where he achieved the rank of A1C-E4. While serving, Don met the love of his life, Mearle Strickland. They were married on August 07, 1959.

He enjoyed drag racing his Valiant, go-kart racing, riding his motorcycle with Mearle, and flying over the Adirondack Mountains with his crew members. After leaving the Air Force, Don moved his family to Massena, where he started at Alcoa, working his way up from the floor to supervisor, retiring in 1987.

Don loved the North Country especially hunting, fishing, camping and cookouts with his family and friends.

Don is survived by his three sons, Bruce and Catherine (Putnam) of Maryville, TN; Bryan and Becky (LaVare) of Massena; Scott and Marie (Relyea) of Massena; his brother, Jerry and wife, Dianne; stepbrother, Terry and wife Brenda Carr of Chase Mills; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren which brought him great joy. He was especially grateful for the special care given for the last several months by his granddaughter, Amanda Simpson.

Don was predeceased by his wife, Mearle of 61 years; parents, Douglas and Harriet; stepfather, Peter Carr; and stepsister ,Jackie (Carr) Downey.

The family and close friends will honor Don and Mearle's life privately.

Local arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home, Winthrop, NY.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at the Hopkinson-Fort Jackson Cemetery where Don and Mearle will be laid to rest together.
