POTSDAM -- Clarkson University Professor of Design & Innovation Daved Barry has been named professor emeritus for six years of exemplary service to the University. Formal recognition took place at commencement on May 11.

Professor Barry joined Clarkson in 2017 as the founding Reh Family Endowed Chair of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the David D. Reh School of Business. His significant research and teaching experience in design-led innovation led him to become a professor of design & innovation in the School of Arts and Sciences, where he helped spur an expansion into design.

He contributed significantly to course offerings, developing and teaching a creative range of courses in innovation and design, including Design Thinking, Leading Innovation, and Portraying Innovation. He also helped develop and team-teach Making and Communicating Innovation, an interdisciplinary, team-taught course that included staff from Ignite and the Writing Center.

Professor Barry's research focuses on how design, art, and the humanities can be applied to innovation, entrepreneurship, organizational design, workplace development, change, and strategy. It has had a significant impact on innovation and design, with more than 6,000 journal citations, including more than 1,800 in the last five years.

While at Clarkson, he published five journal articles and presented eight conference papers.
He has published in the leading management journals, including Academy of Management Review, Organization Studies, Organization Science, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Organizational Change Management, Human Relations, Journal of Management Inquiry, and Management Communication Quarterly; edited several books; and co-led several of the world’s leading management conferences.

In 2021-2022, Professor Barry held a Fulbright Canada Distinguished Research Chair in the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University in Ottawa. His research there focused on public sector innovation. These activities led to two conference presentations and associated research projects in Canada and Scandinavia.

Before coming to Clarkson, Professor Barry was a professor of creative organization studies at Jönköping University International Business School (JIBS), professor of organization studies at Copenhagen Business School; Banco BPI Chair of Creative Organization Studies at Universidade Nova de Lisboa; and held a national chair in management studies at Victoria University in New Zealand.

Professor Barry received both his bachelor of arts degree in psychology and his Ph.D. in strategic management and organizational behavior from the University of Maryland.

Since retiring, Professor Barry is continuing research projects in innovation and design with colleagues in Canada, Australia, and Scandinavia.
