Dale "Bud" Sherburne, 89, Parishville

PARISHVILLE - Dale “Bud” Sherburne, 89, passed away Friday morning, January 26, 2024, at Maple Ridge Lodge Assisted Living Center in Essex Junction, Vermont where he had been residing of late.

Bud was born October 17, 1934, the second son of Frank and Dorothy (Steinberg) Sherburne in Potsdam, New York.

He was very active in sports throughout his school life and played baseball, football, hockey and ran track during High School.

He graduated in 1952 from Potsdam High School. After a short time at Potsdam State, Bud joined the US Army and served proudly for 2 years.

He married Helga Reidel in 1956 and they had 2 children: Daniel and Heidi. With his marriage in 1981 to June Lavarnway Stringer he gained not only his soulmate for 42 years, but also 2 more sons and 3 daughters.

On November 3, 1957, he began his career at Niagara Mohawk and retired 47 years later in 2004.

He found another love in coaching baseball and hockey and was always pleased to receive visits from the many youngsters he worked with over the years. He was honored by the Potsdam High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Bud was multi-talented and built 2 homes –a ranch on the Back Hannawa Road, the other an A frame overlooking Blake Falls Reservoir on Coulon Drive in Parishville (on the property which had been owned by his Uncle Reginald). He had a passion for landscaping, planting flowers, and gardening.

He enjoyed visiting the Potsdam Museum to explore his family genealogical lineage and spent hours at Bayside grooming the many family plots. He was a member of the Elks, VFW, and the Parishville Amvets.

Bud is survived by his loving wife, June; his son, Daniel (Laura Callahan) Sherburne (Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina) and daughter, Heidi Lynn Sherburne (Potsdam) as well as 3 step daughters: Peggy (Dick) Dora (Bloomingdale, NY), Linda (Art) Spellman (Burlington, VT) and Nancy (Dave) Whitson (Vermontville, NY) and twelve grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, John Sherburne (Webster, NY) and 4 sisters: Lois Bartlett (Wernersville, PA), Mary Ezell (Durham, NC), Sue (Terry) Doell (Rochester, NY), and Nan (Rob) Heath (Wethersfield, CT), and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister (Sara Eckl) and 2 step sons, (Rick and Larry Stringer)

Calling Hours will be on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home Potsdam, NY.

There will be a Celebration of Bud’s Life Friday, May 3, 2024, at Trinity Episcopal Church (Potsdam) followed by a private Burial at Bayside Cemetery in Potsdam.
