NORTH BANGOR -- Christopher James Bates, 61, of Pickering Road, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024 in a motorcycle accident.
Chris was born January 1, 1963 in Canton, NY; The son of the late Malcolm "Mac" and Lois Elnina (Whitmore) Bates. He graduated from Canton High School and later attended SUNY Potsdam where he graduated with degrees in general education and art. Chris was a self-employed carpenter who took great pride in his meticulous work, which always had to measure up to his unwavering high standards. Additionally, he was a counselor at Citizens Advocates and designed dentures with Smith Dental Lab, among other professions. Chris was a jack of all trades and master of each.
Chris was truly a free spirit, always embracing life's adventures with open arms. In his youth, he embarked on countless journeys across the country, forging deep connections and making friends wherever he went. His insatiable love for the open road led to his passion for riding motorcycles. From the East Coast to California, Chris fearlessly explored the landscapes of the United States, creating cherished memories and stories that he was always happy to share - but you’d have to ask! His adventurous spirit and zest for life were contagious, inspiring others to embrace their own sense of adventure and seize every opportunity.
Chris was truly the life of family camping trips, where he enjoyed playing games with his nieces and nephews, playing cards into late hours of the night, as well as playing the occasional practical joke. His infectious smile and playful, gentle spirit made every gathering a memorable one. Chris was always available to lend a helping hand to anyone that needed it and frequently would help elevate those around him.
Chris had a deep sense of selfless responsibility for others. He had an innate ability to find those in need and provide what they needed, many times without anyone knowing. Chris pushed himself physically and mentally to provide for his family and others without complaint.
He married his soulmate Teri Rock on September 9, 1994 in Nicholville, NY. Together, they shared a deep and loving bond.
One of Chris’ greatest joys was his son Ethan, whose unwavering dedication to his family and community made Chris immensely proud. Ethan's achievements were a true testament to the strong bond between father and son, and Chris found great satisfaction in watching Ethan thrive and make a positive impact.
Chris had a deep faith and was a Deacon at Christian Fellowship Center in Moira. He found solace in his spiritual community and was always eager to extend his care and support to others.
When he wasn't working or spending time with loved ones, Chris enjoyed tinkering around with nearly anything, going camping, and most recently, riding his motorcycle as he did in his youth. These activities brought him joy and allowed him to appreciate the beauty of the world around him.
Christopher is survived by his loving wife, Teri of North Bangor; his son, Ethan Bates of Saranac Lake; his siblings, Kevin (Carrie) Bates of Pierrepont; Martin Bates (Janie Stein) of Laporte, Colorado, Michele (Randall) Hamilton of Carthage, NY, Craig Bates of Australia, Andrew Bates of Rochester, Lisa (Thomas) Mullie of Herkimer and Sara (John) Bootz of Walden, NY; and countless nieces, nephews, and other family members who were blessed to have him in their lives.
