Chalk the Walk in St. Lawrence County to raise suicide awareness

Posted

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County Suicide Awareness Coalition invites communities, organizations, businesses, school districts, and families to participate in a Chalk the Walk event from Sept. 14-21 in observance of National Suicide Prevention Month.

Following the success of last year's inaugural county-wide Chalk the Walk, which featured a wide array of chalk art and messages of hope, the Coalition is once again hosting a contest.

Participants are encouraged to submit their artwork and messages to compete in one of three categories: Best Image, Best Message, and Most Creative.

The event will kick off with a Color Run hosted by Liberty in Massena on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 9 a.m. at the John Story Trail at Massena High School.

After the run, participants will have the opportunity to “Chalk the Walk” on sidewalks.

Proceeds will benefit the Suicide Awareness Coalition.

For additional details, please visit Liberty’s Event page on Facebook.

“We were overwhelmed by the participation at last year’s Chalk the Walk and are hopeful we will see the same level of participation this year. It was inspiring to see people coming together to lift their fellow community members with messages of hope and caring. As a community, we need to work together to provide hope and information on resources that are available to let our neighbors know it’s ok to get help if they’re struggling,” said Lindsay Best, St. Lawrence County Suicide Awareness Coalition Chair.

The Coalition aims to foster community engagement and open dialogues about suicide prevention while addressing the stigma associated with mental illness. By coming together, we can support one another’s journeys and ensure that everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

Participants are encouraged to share their chalk art and messages on social media, tagging @St. Lawrence County Suicide Awareness Coalition and using the hashtag #stlcyouarenotalone. For further information, including a registration link or to request chalk, please email STLCSAC@stlawco.gov.
