CANTON -- The Canton Fire Department was busy July 8 responding to a grain bin fire at Bordeau Bros at 3:02 p.m.

Fire officials say Assistant Chief Johnson arrived on scene within minutes and was able to confirm a fire in an overhead grain bin silo.

Johnson assumed command of the incident, requesting mutual aid from Potsdam Fire Tower 5 due to an increased risk of possible escalation, officials said.

Canton Fire officials said the request was needed as Canton Tower 1 is out of service for repairs.

Tankers were also brought in from the Potsdam Fire, West Potsdam Fire, Pierrepont Fire, and Pyrites Fire.

Officials said the decision was made to empty the grain bin to reach and extinguish the fire, with all units clearing the scene at 6:08 p.m.

At 4:15 p.m., Canton fire also responded to a vehicle accident in front of the fire incident on Route 11.

The incident involved a car and tractor trailer, requiring Canton Fire and Rescue to respond along with mutual aid units.

Officials said traffic was rerouted around the area until the roadway was cleared.
All units responding to the accident were back in service as of 5:56 p.m., officials said.
