Canton Central's Caleb Young recipient of inaugural Jim Barry Scholarship

CANTON - Hugh C. Williams High School senior Caleb Young was the recipient of the first ever "Jim Barry Memorial Science Scholarship" presented at graduation this year.

The scholarship honors a beloved retired teacher who passed away unexpectedly last summer.

Young, who graduated with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation, was selected by the High School Awards Committee for his exceptional grades and knowledge in the science field.

The scholarship was established by Brian Barry, an educator and son of Jim Barry after his father passed away June 26, 2022 as a way to honor his legacy as a Science Department Chairman, and Chemistry and General Science teacher at Canton schools from 1968-2001.

"Dad believed in higher education and always strived to get the most from his students," Brian Barry said. "His Legacy has left a mark on generations to come."

Young will be attending college at St. Lawrence University in the Fall where he will major in History.

"Caleb is an exceptional young man and my family is proud of his accomplishments and thrilled he received the Scholarship," Barry said. “As an educator myself I also value education and lifelong learning like my father.”

"I believe that the scholarship is a way to give back to the Canton Community. The scholarship is funded for the next 10 years," he concluded.

Mr. Barry is especially grateful to his wife Erica N. Barry, mother Dr. Dana Barry, Canton Superintendent of Schools Ron Burke, Canton High School Principal Doug Dominy, the Canton school board, and members of the community, and of course his family members who all made the scholarship become a reality last summer.
