MADRID — Fort Tribute, 1755 State Highway 345, will host a lecture on the occasion of the 220th Anniversary of the Expedition of Lewis & Clark called “Up the Missouri” on Aug. 24 at 2 p.m.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
In May of 1804, a team of rugged men led by Merriweather Lewis and William Clark, set out to explore territory west of the Mississippi to mainly find out if there was a northwest passage to the mighty Pacific Ocean.
This story takes place over two years and will be told over a three-year lecture series.
This year, will focus on part one, “Up the Missouri,” covering the period from May 1804 to April of 1805.
It includes many adventures of the “Corp of Discovery,” including encounters with the natives, exploring the land, the animals and “flora and fauna.”
It also includes spending their first winter in North Dakota, barely surviving one of the toughest winters in many years.
