Updated July 14 to correct details of play to be performed.

MADRID – The fourth annual Civil War weekend at Fort Tribute will be held Saturday, July 27, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and continues through Sunday, July 28, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. held at Fort Tribute on the grounds of the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum, 1755 State Highway 345.

Highlights of the event include, visiting Union and Confederate camps, historical demonstrations, such as period cooking (common soldier’s meal), and 1860s women’s fashion.

Rudely Stamp'd will be performing the play "Grant on the Eve of Victory" which stars Derek Maxfield as Gen. U. S. Grant and Jess Maxfield as George Alfred Townsend, a reporter for the New York World. The play will not include a performance by Tracy Ford as Gen. Sherman as he has retired from that role.

There will also be music; book lectures, plus demonstrations of artillery firing and a Children’s Muster, which illustrates how members in a military unit are formally gathered, especially for inspection.

Live battle reenactments are held on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. The culture and lessons of reenactments help us understand the sights, smells, and sounds of history.

Balladeer Linda Russell will entertain the “civilians” and soldiers with “The New York Volunteer: Songs and Stories of the Civil War.” Russell accompanies herself on hammered and mountain dulcimers, guitar and penny whistle.

Some additional attractions at SLPEM include a one-room 1800’s schoolhouse and log cabin, carriage barn, heritage fibers building, shingle mill, blacksmith shop, farmhouse, and more.

Fort Tribute built in 2019 is a Civil-War era historical interpretive center located on the grounds of the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum in Madrid.  It also has the only single Civil War monument to recognize the Congressional Medal of Honor recipients from St. Lawrence County that fought in the War 1861-1865.
