Waddington town supervisor suspends Assembly campaign to return to National Guard

Posted

WADDINGTON — Alex Hammond, candidate for the 116th Assembly District seat and current town supervisor, has suspended his campaign because he has been called to active duty.

His opponent in the 116th district race, Mark Walczyk, also announced he would suspend his lawmaker duties while he temporarily returns to active duty to perform his role as a captain in a Forward Engineer Support Team. For more on Walczyk, see story here.

Hammond made his announcement on Facebook. The statement said:

“Effective immediately, I will be temporarily suspending all of my campaign activities. My New York Army National Guard Unit has been activated as a part of the continued response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and I have volunteered to be a part of this activation. It is my duty as a member of the National Guard to serve my state and nation in times like these. This is the single most important issue facing our nation and world, and should take precedence over all else.

“I will continue to fulfill my duties remotely as Waddington Town Supervisor and as a teacher at Lisbon Central School. But for the length of my activation I will not be performing any work for my campaign for Assembly.

I have directed members of my campaign team to continue using this page, to post news related to cornavirus while I am away. I have also prerecorded a number of episodes of the fireside chat series, and these will continue to be posted on their regular schedule. Thank you all for the positive response to these videos so far.

“If in the coming weeks you have questions or need to reach me, feel free to message this page. Please understand that we will try our best to respond to you as quickly as possible.

“Thank you for your understanding and stay safe. I look forward to seeing you all again once we are on the other side of this.”
