Tall ship to visit Ogdensburg this fall

OGDENSBURG — Tall Ship Nao Trinidad will set sail from Rochester to Ogdensburg arriving in time for tours Sept. 7-11 at the Morrisette Park dock on Caroline Street.

The ship has been touring throughout the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes as part of the 2022 Tall Ships Challenge and will make its stop in Ogdensburg as it travels east and ultimately south all the way to Puerto Rico.

The ship will be open daily for tours from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with special festivities happening on Saturday as part of the inaugural Old River Fest.

The Old River Fest is a new event designed to celebrate the maritime heritage of the St. Lawrence River and Ogdensburg as a Port City, past and present.

The festival will take place on the Greenbelt at Morrisette Park on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

The festival will include food trucks, vendors, youth activities and music along with tours of Tall Ship Nao Trinidad.

This event is hosted by the St. Lawrence County Chamber and the Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce.

Food trucks and vendors are invited to register on www.SLCchamber.org.

The festival will include partner activities with the Frederic Remington Art Museum, Ogdensburg Library, Ogdensburg City History Museum, the Friends of Fort de la Presentation and Ogdensburg City Recreation.

"The Nao Trinidad is a replica of the captain ship of what was called the Armada del Maluco (1519-1522) commanded by Ferdinand Magellan. An expedition of five ships, of which only one of them was the protagonist of the greatest maritime adventure in history: the First Round the World Race. This replica is a beautiful life-size ship of 200 t., 29 m. long and 8 m. wide, four masts, five sails and five decks, built with exquisite work in iroko and pine wood by the hands of master craftsmen and master carpenters of the riverside. A ship that sails as a floating museum of Spanish maritime heritage and has already visited dozens of ports in Spain, Mexico, the United States and Europe" reads the website for the ship.

The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Ogdensburg pursued the opportunity to host the ship several months ago and confirmed dates and times last week.
