POTSDAM – Board Certified Pulmonologist Rishi Kumar, MD, has joined the medical team at St. Lawrence Health System’s Canton-Potsdam Hospital. His office is located in the Helen Snell Cheel Medical Campus, 49 Lawrence Avenue, Potsdam.

Dr. Kumar is American Board of Internal Medicine certified in Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care, and Internal Medicine. He earned his medical degree at Saba University School of Medicine, Saba, Dutch Caribbean; and underwent his residency at UPMC Pinnacle, Harrisburg, PA, where he was also Chief Resident. As Chief Fellow, he conducted his fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY.

“St. Lawrence Health System (SLHS) will afford me the opportunity to bring my critical care skills to the Critical Care Unit, as well as provide pulmonary services to the regional community,” Dr. Kumar said. “I am also excited to bring my expertise in advanced bronchoscopy, which will present new diagnostic tools to the System.”

“The healthcare vision of SLHS is focused on exceptional, patient-centered care, and I can’t wait to contribute to the organization. I look forward to building a strong professional relationship with my patients and being a part of this wonderful community. As a resident of Syracuse for the past four years, I truly appreciate the beauty of Upstate New York. The strong sense of community and the friendly atmosphere were a big reason I chose Potsdam, and having grown up in Toronto, Canada, the harsh winters won’t be an issue,” he laughed.

Dr. Kumar is a member of the American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians, Society of General Internal Medicine, and American College of Physicians. He has been involved with a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Prediction Model, Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prophylaxis Protocol, and a Resuscitation Program Committee.

As a Pulmonologist, Dr. Kumar focuses on the health of the respiratory system, which includes the organs that help people breath. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disorders that include infection, structural, inflammatory, autoimmune, and neoplasia (abnormal growth of cells or tumors).
