Rep. Stefanik supports bills providing better access to contraception for women

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who represents St. Lawrence County in the 21st District, is supporting two pieces of legislation to provide access to contraception for adult women.

Stefanik is a cosponsor of the Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act, which would enable women ages 18 and up to access FDA-approved, routine-use birth control pills over the counter, said a press release from her office.

This legislation requires the FDA to give priority review to already-approved, safe oral contraceptives for routine use so that they can be available over the counter for adult women. Additionally, this legislation expands options for women to use tax-advantaged health accounts to pay for their over-the-counter birth control.

Stefanik also is a cosponsor of the Access to Safe Contraception Act of 2022, which prevents any state from banning FDA-approved contraception for use as contraception, preserves conscience protections for health care providers, and maintains state regulation of the practice of medicine and pharmacy.

Stefanik voted against a recent bill pushed by House Democrats to increase access to abortion-on-demand, her office said.

“While House Democrats push their radical abortion-on-demand agenda, I am working to safeguard access for women to resources without compromising the lives of the unborn," Stefanik said. "These solutions that I am supporting will empower women by expanding birth control access and improving maternal health care.”
