POTSDAM — The Health Initiative invites nominations for its three annual awards honoring remarkable individuals: the Patrick “Bird” Kerr Award, the Walter Lacks Award, and the Kelly Johnson-Eilola Award.

The nomination period closes October 31.

The Patrick “Bird” Kerr Award will be given to an employee who exemplifies the admirable qualities Mr. Kerr demonstrated. “Bird” was an employee for the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation and brought smiles to every room he entered. He was very supportive of the Wellness Program in his work as well as in his personal life. Mr. Kerr passed away in 2008. To be considered for the award, an employee must be nominated by fellow employees, administration, or a Health Initiative representative.

The Walter Lacks Award will honor a St. Lawrence County resident who has demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to both personal wellness and to increasing wellness in others. This award was named for amazing county resident Walter Lacks, who well into his 90s worked tirelessly to improve his own health and the health of community members, whether here or across the nation and the globe. Mr. Lacks passed away in 2018. Nominations will be accepted from the community.

The Kelly Johnson-Eilola Award will be given to a resident of St. Lawrence, Lewis, or Jefferson County who stands out as a champion of and advocate for North Country youth. Ms. Johnson-Eilola was a long-time Health Initiative employee dedicated to expanding opportunities for teens in our community. Her professional life with the agency focused on the fields of positive youth development, youth sexual health education, and access to care. Ms. Johnson-Eilola passed away in 2020. Nominations for this award will be accepted from the community.

To view the complete criteria and submit a nomination for any award, please visit the Health Initiative website at gethealthyslc.org. Paper forms are also available by calling the Health Initiative at 315-261-4760.

Nominations for all awards will be accepted until October 31, 2022. Awards will be announced as part of the Health Initiative’s celebration of National Rural Health Day in November.
